In 1016 Cnut became king after defeating Æthelred and the death of Edmund Ironside with whom he shared the kingdom for a short time. 13/
It is important to note that at this time Edward and Alfred, Æthelred's sons with Emma of Normandy, were in exile at the Norman court. Edward will appear later in this thread. 14/
