Reminder that a) some other countries also have entry exit systems b) the system will not apply only to Brits, so the "punishment" narrative is silly c) having left the EU and free movement precisely to "control borders", whining at the EU for doing so is pathetic

I’m far from convinced that assisted dying should be lawful or that we should accept a failure to provide effective end of life care means we should give up on that. However, that article was extremely poorly written and set out. Of that we can agree

I’m torn on this issue. My fears are, since we can’t always guard against malign actors and protect the most vulnerable, there will inevitably be some who die not of their choosing. I also worry about the broader negative effect on funding and research on palliative care generally.

For 150 years, far-right demagogues have behaved in eerily consistent ways. Yet every time one emerges, we act as if we've never seen such a thing before, and we have no idea how to respond. My column on the startling lessons we can learn from history. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We are nonplussed every time one emerges – but there are patterns that are totally predictable, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Unless I’m missing something, despite the UK being a friendlier government towards the EU than before, there’s very little chance or even possibility that anything substantive could be agreed, no? Isn’t that the whole point of the single market etc?
