Agreed, but the transition was pretty rough! I recommend Carl Frey's "The technology trap" as a summary of some of the less salubrious bits of the industrial revolution

e.g. child labour in England during the industrial revolution: - Up to 18 hr shifts; - 1 meal/day; - Often "paid" only food & lodging; - ½ of workforce in textiles, ⅓ in coal mining; - Some torture e.g. filing teeth.
