One of the most remarkable photos ever taken. And it is impossible to comprehend the scale of it. Taken by Hubble, it is a jet of gas being fired out of a supermassive black hole. The jet is 3,000 light years long (1 light year = 6 trillion miles!). Full amazing story👉 mashable.com/article/blac...

In the darkness of space a single shining star is emitting a jet of light blue gas

How to engineer a habitable planet: the rise of marine ecosystem engineers through the Phanerozoic doi.org/10.1111/pala... 🧪⚒️🌊 Cribb & Darroch, 2024. "[T]hrough the Phanerozoic, it is clear that bioturbators and reef-building ecosystem engineers have had different trajectories over geological time"

Multicoloured plot showing the relative abundance of different reef-building organisms through time. Vertical axis indicates relative abundance of the different groups, horizontal axis represents time from the Cambrian (over 500 million years ago) on the left to the present day on the right. A white vertical line towards the left of the plot indicates a reef gap that is seen during Stage 10 of the Cambrian Period.
Legend at the bottom indicates the colours used for ten different reef-builder groups (including, among others, different corals, sponges and tube worms). Alt Text from @ThePalAss

keep thinking about my student last year from asheville who read that investors were buying up property there in expectation of it becoming a climate migration destination and she wrote her final paper about how that doesn't seem quite right given its flood risk history and maps like this one

Unpriced climate risk and the potential consequences of overvaluation in US housing markets - Nature Climate Change

Natural hazards exacerbated by climate change pose serious risks to property markets in the United States. Ignoring these risks could create instability in housing values. This research shows the magn...

Sure you could take the obvious road and pick the sparkly mineral. But how about fighting for the underdog! It might not glitter but it does look EXACTLY LIKE HAM! Vote Rhodochrosite, the Forbidden Bacon, to win the Mineral Cup! www.mineralcup.org/2024/vote/r5m1#mincup24

A four-panel photo series of rhodochrosite. Two looks exactly like cross sections of round ham and two look *exactly* like slices of bacon.

Let's all praise Matt Geiler, who put on a pumpkin mask and did a silly dance in 2006 to fill some dead air time, and thus brought decades of joy to millions of people.

I wrote about how the U.S. needs a disaster corps. Infuse mutual aid with federal cash. Give thousands of people jobs pre-fortifying and rebuilding houses. We keep falling into these disaster traps, and there's so much room for harm reduction. Gift link: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Mutual aid keeps communities afloat in the moments after disasters strike. Why not turn it into a jobs program?

By the end of this month, the UK will bring its 142-year coal-powered era to an end with the closure of its last remaining plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar. Carbon Brief looks at how the UK became the first G7 country to completely phase out coal power.
