Did you know rule 70 of customary IHL prohibits the use of warfare that causes superfluous injury or unnecessary suffering. This is why landmines and "booby traps" (e.g. pager bombs) are prohibited under protocol II to the CCCW. Israel have just maimed thousands with booby traps
Except that devices only worn by combatants are the literal exact opposite of a booby trap or land mine. You would only have that pager if you were a Hezbollah combatant. It doesn't get more targeted than that.
I was wondering about this... like, how they would be classified legally. booby trap makes sense but it was my understanding that this requires the device to be set off by the victim, no? so I thought maybe this would be more like a remote controlled mine?
But the rest of the world will just watch and see how this plays out. I hate the impunity enjoyed by Israel.
Just a guess but I suspect I know at least one country which isn't a signatory to the convention
Wouldn't the fact that the pagers were specifically for Hezbollah operatives take away the issue. Land mines and such "booby traps" are operable post conflict and are indescriminate to military or civilian targets. The pager attack wasn't. Every weapon that can kill, can also injury/maim.
