A great topic and foundational to any consideration of maritime strategy and operations during the Second World War. Right now I just don't have anything interesting new to say about bases and dockyards which is a shame.

I don't recall ever seeing anything written about it, or even just a few photos. It would just be interesting to know how or if this was more common.

Just out of curiosity has anyone done an overview of what flags have survived, where they ended up and why?

New episode! On April 10 1963, the nuclear submarine USS Thresher was lost when it experienced a failure during a test dive. A massive search and rescue effort found the vessel 8400 feet below. All 129 on board were lost. shipwrecksandseadogs.com/blog/2024/07...#navy#history#usnavy

The statement isn't wrong, the group did contribute to those activities, but there were other objectives that are at work in the background too. And the defence of trade wasn't necessarily that high on the US priority list.

A very good read. As a one-stop primer on the oceans, the structure of the marine system the science behind it all this is an ideal introduction and useful adjunct reading for any Seapower course. On the list it goes.
