As an aside, if you haven't had a chance to read Hunzeker's "Dying to Learn" that may be of interest. Sort of an update to Samuels, and includes the French perspective. Personally I'm not sold on his thesis, but it's an interesting argument.

I’ve got to admit that I don’t know a lot about the French experience, so I’d be interested in Hunzeker (looks at prices online and flinches). Getting back to Samuels, I wonder why he didn’t think The Hundred Days were worth a look, for example?
