Great to see the Brisbane Lions win the AFL Grand Final (especially as I am an old Fitzroy Lions fan from the VFL days)

Forgotten Wars and the British Army in Northern Ireland are both quite good.

Had a surprise visitor in the backyard this evening who I have just relocated to our local State Forest.

Close up photo of the head and neck of a young Carpet Python.
A young Carpet Python about 30cm long slithering off a roadside under torchlight at night.

I may be stretching the definition of history a bit in a couple of different directions for #histbookchat#photofriday this week

Paperback copies of two books ā€œThe Odysseyā€ by Homer and ā€œThe Arms of the Futureā€ by Jack Watling

I lie awake at night wondering in dread if something I slapped together after no sleep and too much coffee to get the Chief of Staff off my back is going to end up on Defense Charts.

Amazing what you can download onto your Kindle for free on Amazon Prime #histbookchat#photofriday

Cover of the book ā€œFighters over the Fleetā€™, by Norman Friedman, depicting three Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter planes of WW2 vintage flying over two aircraft carriers and a number of other warships.

ā€˜ā€œBillionaireā€ celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americansā€™, you say? Reminds me of someoneā€¦

Itā€™s been a while since Iā€™ve done a #histbookchat so hereā€™s two books that arrived in the mail yesterday. Between a family connection to 2/31st Bn and being a gunner myself these books tick a couple of boxes for me.

Covers of two hardcover Australian military history books - ā€œCrossed Boomerangs: A history of all the 31st Battalionsā€ and ā€œThe ā€˜Letterā€™ Batteries- the history of the ā€˜letterā€™ batteries in World War IIā€

This is a pretty good dissection of a book and author I am embarrassed to admit I took seriously around the time it was published. (Although, even then, I was unimpressed when he wrote about topics I was more familiar with, like 20th century warfare)

I scored a few Australian military biographies at the garrison library while I was doing reserve work this week - thanks to the poll I ran on Twitter, Iā€™ll be making a start on Morshead this weekend #histbookchat
