I once saw Kanye live. He was opening for the Rolling Stones. 2006. (What a bill, in hindsight). The Oops-all-Boomers crowd of Stones fans barely knew who he was. Kanye kept trying the move you describe here, and the crowd consistently did not respond *at all*. A cherished memory.

I love The Who. For many years, the audience (including me) has sung along on some of the more popular songs. It's a nice moment.
