The transfer of the islands is separate from the domain for now I guess. Any that *do* exist might just get their registrations transferred in the case Mauritius is successful in claiming them from the UK. As for if they'll exist as "BIOT" doesn't anymore, we still have ".su" for the USSR.

oh woah then again, im not really sure whats preventing IANA from dissolving .io as a ccTLD, and ICANN immediately after opening a .io gTLD would be an administrative hassle, but much less than .io being defunct in a few years

Currently reading fedi's take on this and its bringing up an issue that's constantly swept under the carpet. AP instances *cannot* migrate to another domain. If a domain does cease to exist you have to force everyone to migrate, and there is a bunch of large .io instances (like misskey.io)

.sh domains stay winning

I think io will most likely be requalified as gtld and handed off rather than nuked out of existence Pretty sure many, many registries will be more than happy to get their hands on it lol

imo when country codes become generic they should stay domains. not as concerning when it's .io and it's mostly io games and small sites, but what about Tuvalu? so many use .tv including twitch, and its not about the country
