one of the tics of the modern right is that they will say they are “anti-establishment” but they won’t specify what the nature of their challenge to the establishment is, because what they really mean is that they’re opposed to liberal democracy.
But also the idea that Mars is a "backup" for humanity is a total farce. Any human settlement in any place other than earth would be so dependent on earth that if anything happened to earth, the other space settlements would soon follow.
I could imagine a scenario in about 1000 years from now where we have made this a desirable prospect, but not before that.
