I really hope so. I think there's nowhere to go but up once we get past this period of exhaustingly long, cameo-packed cold opens. I doubt they'll ever get better at this point—SNL's averaged like 2-3 good ones per season for years now—but at their best they're just a thing to quickly get behind us.
Longfellow's waterslide sketch was the only big winner, but there was a nice flow, and the most aggressively crowdpleasing moments (Washington 2, a digital short???) were balanced by the bigger swings (Jane on WU, waterslide). I expect tumult, but interesting triumphs ahead. (3/3)
They're trying to cobble new voices against old ones, and there's a bit of friction, but Nate being there to regulate the energy helps smooth over the rougher edges. It does make me wonder how the show will fare with a host who does less to set the tone in a specific way (2/3)
I DESPERATELY want to stump for SNL when I think people are being too critical of it, but man, this last episode would be easy, credible evidence for a thinkpiece on how SNL is the deadest that it's ever been.
Remember when this was supposed to be the future of social media lol
