Ah! I should have known
âThat so few now dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of the time.â â John Stewart Mill
I hated it when I said I wanted to work in publishing and people told me how impossible it was, so I try to be encouraging. I recommend people donât discount small publishers or editorial roles in non-publishing companies to get experience. And I say the same as you about courses.
I feel like itâs a balance between being encouraging and not being misleading. I also advise ppl to think beyond editorial roles.
âConsider moving to England, for a few years at leastâ feels like shitty advice but thatâs how a lot of Irish people I know cut their teeth, myself included. The two most solid pieces of advice I give are: you donât have to do a publishing masters; you should consider doing a copy editing course.
Quick question for publishing people. When people tell you they want to get into a career in publishing, what do you advise them? I get asked this all the time. I hate to be discouraging but in Ireland itâs so hard, with the industry being so small.
Thatâs an amazing achievement, congratulations Lawrence!
