Looks like summer 2024 temperature would have been pretty much an average summer in the 1990s
I wonder what the temperature would be with a similar circulation pattern today.
A quick look at 20th century reanalysis shows that this was associated with a ridge over much of western and central Europe. Strong southerly winds linked to a low pressure system to the west advected warm air north towards the UK.
Yesterday parts of the UK were unusually warm for the start of September, reaching 30.0C. But this was far from the warmest September day - on 2nd September 1906, the UK hit 35.6C at Bawtry near Doncaster. That was the hottest day of the year and (joint) 5th highest annual max of the 20th c.
That's a crazy amount of rain for one month (Uni of Reading's site gets 634mm in a year)! Was this very localised or did other parts of the Highlands receive record rainfall?
