"clue" originally meant "a ball of string" (spelt clew) since Theseus used a ball of string to find his way out of the Minotaur's labyrinth, "clue/clew" became a metaphor for "thing that helps you solve a puzzle" or "thing that points you in the right direction"
Come to think of it that the original "clew" finds it's origin in the Dutch word "kluwen" wich means "rope or thread wound into a ball" So all start in Dutch with "kluwen". Changes to "clew" in the US and became "clue" with a differend meaning. By the way, in Dutch we also use "clue" as 'solution.
One is never too old to learn something. 😊 Thank You.
Every day is a school day.
"Yes, I know what a bull looks like! Why do you keep asking? Is it the claws? Should I make the bull's claws longer?"
This suggests that the west Wales pronunciation (CLEH-oo) is near to the original!
I’d like to make an accusation..,it was Colonel Theseus, with the ball of string, in the labyrinth.
That looks like a bobbin
No lie: this is exactly the sort of thing I come to the Internet for.
That shy Minotaur peeking around the corner certainly doesn’t look very dangerous. More like it wants a nice bowl of milk but is a little too scared to walk right up and beg for it.
