Looking forward to hearing it!
Thanks, Stan! And I love that you do a million different things all so well. (I'd feel like a one-trick pony in comparison, except ponies are fast.) Keep up the good work.
I like this, Stan! It's a side of you I haven't heard before. As far as the voices go, they're pretty good, and would be adequate for my purposes. I wouldn't think they're real people singing, but they represent singing well enough to make the imaginative leap needed.
Wow Stan, that’s a very generous offer! I remember you did a convincing mockup of your Requiem, but I think that involved actually singing all the parts? That’s far too labor-intensive! Especially as this is a WIP that will keep changing.
I posted a thread over on mastodon this morning about what I’ve learned so far: mainly that choral music has wildly different connotations for me than for the typical target customer for this kind of thing. musicians.today/@mcmullin/11...
But this project is so large and slow going that a live performance or a proper recording would be a long way off, if they ever happen at all, and in the meantime it would be helpful to have something to give people who ask what this sounds like. Advice is welcome, and much appreciated!
I’ve used notation programs with MIDI playback for 20 years now, but I never cared how bad it sounded, because I only use it to check my work. The notated score is my finished product, and real performances are the goal.
Anybody here have experience with virtual instruments for MIDI to produce decent approximations of choral and vocal music? I’m looking for something that might sound more convincing than this:
Since I haven’t tried posting any music here yet, here’s a MIDI mock-up of a 2.5-minute passage I just completed from my work in progress for chorus and orchestra. (It’s out of context, but feel free to let me know what you think.) makertube.net/w/suGsnp4E2T...
This is a short excerpt from my ongoing work in progress, The Luminous Mysteries: a large-scale composition for chorus and orchestra, setting the complete prayers of the rosary. This 2.5-minute por...

"Time and again, these forgotten and once-neglected composers turn out to reward our curiosity and effort in that magical moment when the house lights dim, the performers make their way to the stage, and the first notes begin their odyssey through the hall."
I've written an article on why programming a more diverse group of composers, both historical and modern, has been such a rewarding journey of discovery (free to view, for now): www.notesfromthepodium.co.uk?p=1832
