The Medium Ævum Essay Prize 2025 is now open to submissions!

The Society for the Study of Medieval Languages and Literatures invite graduate students from across the globe to submit to the annual Medium Ævum Essay Prize
Submission guidelines:

- Graduates should submit an essay of no more than 8,000 words, on a topic in the range of interests of Medium Ævum, by 12:00 midday (GMT) Monday 2nd of December, 2024.
- The Prize is open to post-graduates and those recently graduated with a higher degree

The Prize:

- The value of the prize is £500
- An entry declared proxime accessit will be awarded £100
- The winning essay and other entries of sufficient quality and promise may be considered for publication in Medium Ævum

In the wake of the announcement at our AGM, the Society are delighted to share the Winner and Proxime Accessit of the Medium Aevum Essay Prize 2024: 👉Winner: Christopher G. Lu 👉Proxime Accesit: Rowan Wilson Our warmest congratulations to Christopher and Rowan.

In the wake of our recent AGM, the Society are delighted to formally announce the Winner and Proxime Accessit of the Medium Aevum Essay Prize 2024:

- Winner: Christopher G. Lu, ‘Learned humour, humorous learning: John Free’s Latin translation of Synesius’s Economium Calvitii (1461) and its transmission’

- Proxime Accessit: Rowan Wilson, ‘Feeling “aliene”: reimagining affectivity in the works of Walter Hilton’

We extend our sincere congratulations to both the Winner and the Proxime Accessit for their outstanding submissions. The essays submitted for the 2024 Essay Prize were of an exceptionally high standard, and we thank all those who shared their work with us.

Submissions for the Medium Aevum Essay Prize 2025 will be opening shortly, and details for how to submit your entry will be posted soon.
