Someone in my lab suggested we submit to a NPG journal. The APC - $12k. It’s absurd and increasingly I’m finding that I don’t even want to read papers in these journals.

It seems to me that the EiC ought to just assign another AE to serve as EiC for that paper and that solves the COI.

It is perfectly acceptable. Just did this. Have published and been rejected by journals where I was serving as AE. Have handled these types of submissions too. It did not influence my decision.
