Happy Tuku Whenua day. 184 years ago Apihai Te Kawau & NgÄti WhÄtua ÅrÄkei joined with government officials at Te Rerenga Oraiti (Point Britomart) to celebrate the foundation of Auckland. This momentous day was the result of Apihai offering 3000 acres for the settlement to occur.

I find the headline & Lianneās claim that Te Tiriti was written to deliberately mislead highly problematic. It is an old argument & runs the danger of creating justification for ignore Te Tiriti. It also reduces MÄori to the insidious myth of the ādumb noble savageā that has permeated our history.
