In the 80s & 90s there was a consensus among economists that employers NICs were a terrible tax as they were a tax on jobs. What changed?

I wouldnā€™t normally even consider a recipe for anything that has 20 steps, but that looks lushšŸ˜

The Tories are lost because every part of their ideology has failed. Commentary on the leadership race has focused on the candidates, but their fundamental problem is that their entire worldview has collapsed. By me, for Bloomberg - Ā£ but screengrabs: šŸ§µ www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Tories Are Lost Because Their Ideology Failed

The question facing the Conservative party is what to do when its core beliefs turn out to be fantasies.

Excellent šŸ§µ. It is extraordinary that the economic theory underlying Thatcherism, after George Osborne tested it to destruction, & widely discredited by academic economists (I.e. those not employed by banks) even before, is still so accepted politically, that Rachel Reeves has to pay it lip service.

Even though Badenoch is as mad as a box of frogs, I concur with @samfr.bsky.social that anyone who is not Robert Jenrick is preferable to Robert Jenrick. But in this case not by much.

Tories Are Lost Because Their Ideology Failed. Here's a terrific paragraph by @cjayanetti.bsky.social@bloomberg.comwww.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

The last 14 years have seen the total failure of virtually every element of Conservative ideology. That isn't idle polemic ā€” the Tories lost because nothing works, and because nothing they did worked. ā€œSmall stateā€ austerity left public services in a state of collapse. Proposed tax cuts threatened to blow up the economy under Liz Truss. Privatization crashed the probation service. Deregulation achieved few upsides and helped contribute to the Grenfell disaster. Culture wars alienated moderate voters. Targeting immigrants left public services understaffed and resulted in policy fiascos such as the Windrush scandal and the now-scrapped Rwanda deportation scheme. A hard line on law and order, without commensurate public spending, ended in overcrowded prisons and dysfunctional police. All this without even mentioning Brexit.
