The reference was just simple 3d geometric blocks, and then I drew over them to add the details like the buildings, sign, and vehicles. I did it a bunch of times because over the same reference over the course of months until I was happy!

First, started with a rough hand drawn top down map for playtesting. Then I blocked it out roughly in sketchup, which has an isometric camera mode for exporting the reference. Then, with the ref, I just drew ithe map about 10 different times until I was happy with it, haha
One of the things that has always rubbed me the wrong way about magical tattoos is how they're usually removable, the same as any other magic necklace, ring, or staff. With the engraver, each spell takes a percentage of your skin. When you're out, you're out.
