Had a wonderful time doing unusual things in Manchester: attending a political theory conference, having the Labour Party archives all to myself and enjoying the sunshine.
Happy to read alternative takes re why this might be a great idea and Macron a mastermind.
I struggle to see how left wing voters could vote for anyone standing against the RN again. Macron, who presented himself as the bulwark against the RN, isn't doing a particularly good job at keeping it in check (as weâve suggested in previous work: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

However, it seems clear to me that as soon as it is politically expedient for them to do so, theyâll pull whatever undeclared âexternal supportâ to his government, and if they play their cards well, theyâll stand a better chance of winning than before.
He has solved (potentially) the problem of not having a government to pass the budget. As long as he doesnât try to do anything too extravagant, Barnier will be allowed to keep his place as PM. And by âwill be allowedâ, I mean the RN will allow him to do his job.
Now that I have slept on it, my 2 cents on Macronâs choice to appoint Barnier (nothing too innovative, I fear). It seems to me to be yet another high risk strategy from Macron. By appointing a PM that comes from the Right, and does not offend the RN, heâs bought him some time.
On my way to Manchester to present this beauty at the Mancept workshops. Lots of firsts: first paper in a great lineup, first time in Manchester and first time at a political theory conference.
