It boils my blood that California uses prisoners to help fight forest fires. They get full training, experience and skills, but once out of prison they can't get jobs as firefighters. These people are risking their lives and they can't get jobs after!

And fucking networks make feelgood shows about it

FYI the law changed in 2020 to open up firefighting jobs for formerly incarcerated people. There’s still the issue of having them do that work while incarcerated of course.

Fwiw 60% of the US fire service aren't paid- there are no firefighting jobs. I'm not condoning using prisoners (obvs), but tbc they cannot get jobs bc it is not in fact a paying job and that's also why they have to use prisoners- there is no paid US fire service.
