This literally took my breath away. Do you KNOW how big a deal this is? Aging-in-place, at home, is the BEST way to care for a senior with dementia. But can I tell you how much it cost to hire care for my mother at home, even shitty care in a low-cost market (Eastern Iowa)? $14,000 A MONTH.

Harris proposes new funds for at-home senior care, aiming at 'sandwich generation'

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced a plan to expand healthcare benefits to cover at-home senior care in an interview on ABC's "The View" program on Tuesday, the latest policy proposal in her effort to boost the "care economy" and lower healthcare costs.

It's so much to pay, and at the same time it comes out to a less than $20/hr wage! This used to twist me up about childcare too: it's so expensive, and yet it gives barely a living wage to the people doing literally one of the most important possible jobs that I can conceive of!

it cost so much, it was cheaper in the long run for me to quit work and stay home to care for my mom myself! This will be a blessing for so many. (in all fairness, when it got too much for me & I moved mom into long term care, she loved it & was quite the social butterfly until she passed)

This is a HUGE deal for disabled and aging folks and their families.

It comes too late for all my elderly relatives, but I'm happy for people still dealing with this Because, wow

For a person like me, with no one to care for me later in life and not enough savings for this type of expense, my worst nightmare is to land in the local nursing homes where I KNOW malign neglect is a serious problem. this would be real relief

Yes. My mother is bedridden mostly due to general self-imposed deterioration & awful irascibility (all her carers hate her). Think she spends about $20K a month for 24/7 care. She was pretty well-off but is now at the point where she'll probably have to sell her house & go into a cheaper care home.

This will help my partner and I bc we care for a disabled elderly relative at home. That’s one reason I need remote work, and with me now laid off again and offices all insisting on RTO, this is a literal godsend for us. And it will help me later, too, personally, bc I have rheumatoid arthritis.

Austria is doing this at scale; enabled by massive funding by the gov‘t, but also exploiting Eastern European labour. My grandparents had it. But I got to say: it’s unsustainable as a default choice for an aging population. It’s no alternativ to *good* care homes.
