so, like, a 3 bedroom house or condo in the only neighborhoods in my city where you can walk to a school or supermarket costs $1.5M

wsj headline about the falling us birthrate. "why are american women having fewer children than they say they want"

Fucking capitalism, only for people. You are only successful if your business (population) continues to grow. Maybe, if like other animals in a healthy ecosystem, we had periods of increase and decline we would be better off? Just spit balling here.

It isn't just money or walkability, but sure those impact it. It's much bigger than that though.

Having a kid in this country is EXPENSIVE, too. Pre-preschool childcare is borderline-unaffordable; preschool itself isn't much better. There's no relief until kindergarten. Raising two kids close in age is financially out of reach to most people, meaning there are just fewer kids.

Also…men need to figure out we don’t want children with them if they act like a man-child.

Trying to rent anything family sized is similarly tough. The 3 or (heavens) 4 bedroom units in my city all seem to have 3 or 4 or 5 fulltime earners living in each. Hard to outbid households that can split the rent 4 ways

90% of america being car-mandatory sprawl means each additional kid is another car seat and more and more time on the road chaffeuring them to schools and activities. the few walkable areas are so pricey you can't afford a 3rd bedroom. no surprise that most people who want kids stop at 1 or 2!

Yeah, there's a huge gap between being able to live decently as DINKs in a small apartment and being able to afford kids. If you didn't know any better you'd assume our society was structured to discourage having children

Also, hey, the world will be uninhabitable for my child when they would be my age so .....
