The point of laws like this isn't really to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants but to create conditions where if an undocumented immigrant worker has a dispute with their employer, the employer can credibly threaten to deport them.

It's not just a war on immigrants, it's a war on free labor - having an exploited underclass of immigrant labor who cannot avail themselves of any kind of legal recourse in disputes with employers without facing deportation pushes down wages and conditions for citizen workers as well

I see the progression like this: 1. Pass 'stop and deport anyone' laws 2. Start issuing 'guest passes' to make sure you're deporting the 'right' people 3. Voila! You have that 'Guest Worker' Program GWB was trying to push in 2006 (Ask the British Poles and German Turks how well THAT worked out!)
It's not just the undocumented -- while they aren't enforcing in the interior _for now_, if they do you'll be "guilty until proven innocent", AKA latinos will have to have papers on them all the time.
