Los Angeles has gotta be one of the most extreme flips from "tons of cheap housing for slackers" in the 80s and 90s to "professionals who make six figures are commuting in from San Bernardino because they can't afford to live there anymore" today bsky.app/profile/crs1...

Los Angeles has got to have the most chaotic zoning situation in America, there’ll be three blocks of huge apartments and then across the street there’ll six blocks of shitty single family homes that also cost $1 million

It's destroyed Austin's housing market, too. (And our downtown. And our music scene.)

it's kind of a mixed bag tbh, some stuff is cheaper now, some stuff more expensive. even housing hasn't exploded as much as people think - but housing *specifically in centers of big cities* went from nadir in the 70s to peak now.

As a kid out of eastern Europe, I was shook when folks out of LA told me they're still living with roommates well into their late 20s. Like, what do you mean you can't afford a nice place for yourself on $60k/year?

Idk…my 1st room in a flat in San Francisco circa 1992 was $150/month.

I moved into a really nice 1 br apt in Los Feliz in a building with a pool for $1000 a month in 2002. This was pricey given that I made $9 an hour.

I’ll never forget my shock at hearing that someone could live in a boarding house in Los Angeles in the 1940s for $14/week, including 3 squares a day. Even adjusting for inflation, you couldn’t do that in the 80s.

My brother and I were renting a 2bd2ba condo in Hermosa Beach with an ocean view for $1400 in 2001
