You can resolve people's material needs through politics. You can't resolve people's desire to purchase class signals because people's desire to improve their relative class position is definitionally impossible to satisfy

Wouldn’t reducing inequality help though? The US has among the highest gini coefficients in the OECD, and I suspect that a lot of our weird class stuff stems from the fragility of our class positions. Take that away and maybe we get less weird about it.

And this is a joy of living in the UK. Less bombarded by traditional TV advertising, and crippling amounts of cultural modesty.

How about policy to redistribute the means of production so that only one class remains?
