Even connecting to an existing one can be puzzling. And at least in QGIS the way the database manager refers to getting/putting data is the reverse from what you'd assume. I remember that really throwing me at first.

I feel like using PostGIS or other databases is very useful and powerful (not even necessarily writing queries, just like saving layers/styles somewhere other than the local filesystem) but the tools to get started interacting with them are really unintuitive.
