Willem de Kooning, Asheville, 1948. The title of the painting references de Kooning's time teaching at Black Mountain College, the influential mid-20th-century experimental arts school located near the town of Asheville, North Carolina www.phillipscollection.org/collection/a...

An abstract painting, including large shapes in white and tan, its forms mostly defined by looping black lines and punctuated by areas of color, including pink, green, red, and yellow

The presumption of innocence entitles Eric Adams to a fair and speedy trial and a release on his own reconnaissance (assuming his passport is held so he doesn’t run off to Türkiye). It does not entitle him to operate in any position of public trust, let alone one he’s on trial for exploiting.

Painful irony w/Helene's colossal damage in Asheville: the city recently placed #3 on a list of US cities most likely to experience "climate migration". Asheville summers are cool by Southeastern standards, and annual avg precip (~36") is low for the region. www.citizen-times.com/story/news/l...

Migration due to climate change may land Asheville a lot of new residents in coming years according to a sustainable real estate expert.

I've seen 'natural disaster' written unironically on here several hundred times over the last few days, and people I love you, but we have to move on from that term. The field already has for very good reasons.

Scotland has detected no cases of cervical cancer in women born between 1988-1996 who were fully vaccinated against HPV between the ages of 12 and 13. Vaccines are incredible.

hello political scientists & sociologists & political organizers/staff of any sort who might want to talk about US politics for a few days in Boston in March - Submit an abstract to People-Ing Politics - Race, Class, Culture and US Politics March 6th - 9th 2025 Boston Submit at ess2025.exordo.com

Flyer, most important text reads:
We invite submissions for this mini-conference (within the Eastern Sociological Society’s annual conference) aimed at bringing together sociologists, political scientists, and practitioners who study US politics with attention to race, class, inequality, and the importance of social and cultural forces.
We seek paper submissions on a range of topics, including but not limited to:
- how people’s cultures and social groups shape their approach to politics
- how issues of race, class, and other forms of inequality influence political engagement
- how behind-the-scenes actors in political institutions impact politics.
We aim to spark conversations to address the interlinked crises of rising authoritarianism, increasing inter-group hostility, and steepening economic inequality. (links in post)
