Feed goats first cutting hay, limited or no alfalfa. If they don't get enough roughage they don't thrive. Do not feed them horse hay or alfalfa. The former is too fine, the latter too rich.

I don't hay (any hay bought will be sorghum sudan) & alfalfa isn't a thing here. What I have is mostly King Ranch Bluestem (80%+ lignin) & LOTS of young mesquite & huisache.
