someone posted a thing I & a fair few others disagreed with and now I'm seeing the usual "oh they deleted it lolol" takes well yes they saw the reaction and thought better of the take isnt that what you'd like? Or should we have them keep a bad take up forever for the dunking experience it gives us

the only reason I care when someone deletes is that I'm curious to know what everyone is responding to, & trying to read the thread without the impetus post is v. confusing. I don't dunk on ppl so I'm not here for that. I'm just a looky lou who wants to watch the discourse flow by and be in the know

Especially because it's not like posting an apology/retraction underneath would stop everyone coming in to add their "Well actually you're wrong".

Deleting is good! Good for them

The victory should be in making someone think and improve themselves, but many people will only take the 'victory' of 'being right'. (Caveat: It's not always wrong to take that victory! But it can be... *crass*, to take it so publicly. And ultimately: damaging to 'your side'.)

I think its a sign that an online community is filled with abusers when people are asked to delete poorly worded post or bad take and said people agree to delete that post/take only for a ton of folk to endlessly post screenshots demonizing the individual who deleted what they were asked to delete.

It's important to delete or update with correct information. Why is that bad?
