And, to be honest, I find such hashtags --due to the nature of algorithmic social media-- often turn into dick measuring contests, rather than being an actual fun drawing exercise. Just look at the number of fully rendered colour pieces that turn up in the Inktober hashtag on other platforms.
At this point, Inktober is more of a brand than a fun artistic exercise, and taking part only helps to spread it. If artists want to take part in such an exercise, they are far better off partaking in one of the many offshoots that popped up in response to the controversy.
The TL;DR version is that, a few years back, the creator of the hashtag (or, at least, helped popularise it) threatened to sue artists who were selling work using the Inktober name, which he had copyrighted. On top of that, he also plagiarised the art of Alphonso Dunn.
