If there's one thing I've started enjoying over the last few years, it's that most people seem to have realised that Coraline had nothing at all to do with Tim Burton, and that the "director of the Nightmare Before Christmas" was Henry Selick.

Not to mention Selick went on to make his own movie: Wendell and Wild; another thing people should realize too; his work on Coraline, however, will always be remembered as being phenomenal.

I have to admit, I only had this realization myself about a week ago 😅

It’s a visually beautiful film, but the addition of a character and resulting change in female agency kills it for me.

And the aesthetic of Nightmare is very similar to films made by the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, which sort of indicates that maybe Danny Elfman had a bigger influence on the art than Burton did.

Henry did a panel at the Cardiff Animation Festival where Nightmare was previewed- I think he enjoyed the chance to talk to fellow animators who understood only too well how the name above the credits wasn't necessarily the talent :-)

I still can't believe people didn't know Coraline was a book. It's on my shelf, love the movie, but the book was always one of my favourites of yours, even after growing up with the sandman.

All the best Tim Burton movies didn't involve Tim Burton
