as someone who believes in copyleft and fair use and loves collage art heres the key difference between that and generative ai human intent someone made a conscious choice to select these images/videos/recordings/texts and assemble them into a new work ai has no intent and a human does not curate
100%! as a collage artist, my goal is to make my work look less like the materials i use, not exactly like them.
If we view art as a form of communication, and communication as the act of trying to get what is in the communicator's head into the head of the recipient(s), then AI cannot create art for the simple reason there's nothing in it's head to communicate :-)
Yeah, I don’t get people who are trying to make this into some unsolvable problem.
There's also just...more to collage art than "oh I mushed together existing stuff" oh my fucking god. Like...a ton of us do original work and incorporate collage in? Collage is like, just another additional complex layer
AI is not sentient nor does it have true emotional intelligence. It cannot create. It can only generate.
the human behind it has the intent, not only that but it produces something original. robots cannot exists alone without a human's creativity
there is a small gray area in which an ai is trained on specially selected material akin to what holly herndon did with some of her ai experimentation but just shoving a prompt into an llm or some other generative ai is pretty black and white theres no human curation and minimal human intent
