STEPHEN A: Skip I want to ADDRESS this issue. [BAYLESS nods] You KNOW I am sensitive to the institution of chattel slavery BAYLESS: Absolutely STEPHEN A: BUT!

Thread by @eigenrobot on X (Twitter): before i being i want to be clear that what i am about to say is not an endorsement of chattel slavery i have to imagine chattel slavery was a morally improving innovation like yes it clearly created some incentives on the second order that made things very unfortunately bad but imagine life before slavery specifically, suppose you (a barbarian) defeat your outgroup in a war before slavery was invented you just kill everyone right? what else are you gonna do basically it seems like slavery solved genocide so like i said this is a moral improvement on the first order the problem is of course, oh shit, that actually incentivizes a bunch of wars probably, once slaves are considered tradable its a new way to monetize war, and fast so net I would say slavery has been more harm than good. but the first slavers' hearts were in the right place at least compared to the alternative

Not posting that was always an option

This is so dumb in so many ways, but the idea that before slavery was “invented” there was no option but to kill everyone is so stupid I don’t even know where to begin

Men will literally defend the institution of chattel slavery rather than read up on the traditions of ritualized warfare amongst historical acephalous societies.

If you start by defining the 'type of slavery' you're going to talk about, we see you for the problem you are. No one ever thinks your talking about Egyptian Apprenticeship or some shit like that. You are not smart, these are not new contemplations and no one wants, nor needs, to 'hear you out'.

"Slavery solved genocide" is certainly a take, but it was "Slavers hearts were in the right place" as though slavery was a 501(c)3 trying to feed starving orphans that really melted my brain.

Classic example of the market expanding to take a good idea and turning it into the most morally repugnant version.

if I die in the next 24 hours it will be due to a severe immune overresponse born solely of reading those tweets
