I mean, they still had to be bled entirely dry before the program paid for anything. People are left with literally like $100 a month from social security after room/board. Most of that is eaten by basic needs like incontinence supplies and hand soap. But 100% better than WI.

I don’t think people realize how incredibly bleak it is to try to navigate a patchwork of messy, half-funded state programs to get the basic needs met of a vulnerable adult. Having a federal program with consistent rules and eligibility would be life changing.

The kindest, hardest working, most dedicated social workers wracked their brains and ended up giving us a list of homeless shelters in the hope that it might unlock some eligibility for something. My parent was heartbroken having to leave their adopted hometown.

My parent had to move in with relatives in MN for 9 months because they couldn’t live alone, and WI had absolutely nothing for a working class person with only 80k left in savings. Nursing homes wouldn’t even take them without guarantee of almost 200k.

Minnesota has a remarkably good elder safety net. My parent would have been trapped in a nursing home forever if there wasn’t a state run program that provided assisted living.

I feel like this is whispered directly into the ear of most of my women friends, panicking over what happens if the kid isn’t out of the house before parent has a stroke. Half of the homeless population is over 50, guys.

Millennial with kids and a parent who needs long term care right here. If in-home care would have been an option my loved one maybe wouldn’t have deteriorated to the point of needing a nursing home for an entire YEAR.

I’ve seen people suggesting this is a pitch to seniors and, while it is in a way, the real target of this are their kids. They’re the ones who would otherwise have to shoulder the financial burden on their own and/or personally provide the care for their elderly parents themselves.

My kid and I made puppets. This is his. His puppet is wearing pants.

Brown paper bag puppet with orange cut out arms and drawn features. The mouth and eyes are normal but what was intended to be pants looks like a sex organ that rhymes with Venus.

This continues to be a problem with true believers. Outrage is motivating in a loud and public way, but doesn’t get anyone to actually educate themselves on how anything is funded or executed.
