Most college professors have little to no pedagogical training. That is... they are expected to become experts in their field, but they get little to no training on how to actually TEACH the way K–12 educators do. OTOH, many of us seek out such training voluntarily these days.

This is seriously something I warn my high school students about. (Especially the ones who come to visit after their first semester at college!)

This was the most surprising thing to me when I moved from law to higher ed: no training, no oversight, no feedback loop. That’s when I learned that teaching undergrads is far from the first priority for colleges and universities.

We had excellent pedological resources and course, but all optional and many of my colleagues have never used these resources (or knew about them).

I don't know about the "many" part... that may be generational. But when I started my TT job (2008), no one in my dept besides me had one lick of pedagogical training and not one of them was interested in getting it. Many of those folks are still there.

And sometimes we are actively prevented from seeking out that training because the incentive is to make good lab monkeys and not good teachers.

I am mystified that higher Ed hasn't tapped into K12 teachers as a resource. You don't have to take classes or get a teaching degree. K12 experts are RIGHT THERE!

As a grad student with an undergrad degree in education, this enrages me constantly. The arrogance of profs* who don't bother learning how to actually teach & the lack of training and guidance for TA's does a disservice to everyone involved. *Some put in the effort and are great!
