MARCH st At the first event for VCU SJP’s “Week of Rage,” around 180 VCU students and Richmond community members gathered in the compass and marched to the Virginia Israel Advisory board (VIAB), a government agency established to strengthen the link between Virginia and 'Israel.! The people marched to demand the end to a year of genocide, 76 years of occupation, and the normalization of zionism through institutions such as VIAB. > The march was a powerful demonstration of resistance, with participants successfully carrying banners to the VIAB building, fending off zionist provocations, and delivering impactful speeches. However, protesters did face police surveillance throughout the march and an aggressive response afterward. Following the protest, the Richmond Police Department (RPD) arrested one bike marshall, and other marshals reported being followed. We have observed this predatory pattern from RPD as they have gone after bike marshalls and truck drivers who have led marches in the past and given them tickets, and they tend to do so in moments of vulnerability. The arrest itself was violent, with a patrol car running over the arrestee’s bike, causing it to crush and immobilize them as around 15 officers surrounded them. RPD deliberately prolonged the booking process, exacerbating the trauma experienced.

They have since been released and are receiving support from the community, with details on how to help them to be shared soon. < SJP at VCU vehemently condemns this disgusting display of police brutality, which demonstrates that the RPD protects and serves only the interests of zionists. This incident underscores the pervasive surveillance and tactics employed to stifle our struggle for liberation, and illustrates the alarming criminalization of COVID-safe practices, such as wearing masks, a practice we must continue to protect our health amidst surges of COVID-19. We must remember that the forces that carried out this arrest are interlinked to the IDF and we must resist this event in the same manner we resist the IDF. FORCES THAT OPPRESS US.
