Year 9 is now: 1. English identity - Anglo-Saxons and Vikings 2. Jamaica and enslavement 3. British America and independence 4. India - EITC and the Raj 5. Hong Kong 6. South Africa
Good question, we went from a 3 year GCSE to a 2 year, which gave us the opportunity to plan year 9 from scratch. Our curriculum for y7 and y8 is chronologically structured from Norman Conquest to Civil Rights. This meant in y9 we could spend a full year exploring migration, empire and identity
Really great article. I particularly liked how the approach was trialled with year 8 and revisited with year 9. Very responsive to the needs of the students. Also loved the idea of the Stormzy/Glastonbury lesson in the y9 enquiry
Quite possibly, we are always adapting and refining things. I added a lesson in last year on ‘how did Hong Kong become a global city?’ Which provided some nice links to geography and migration too. We found it a great way for them to encounter communism and compare with capitalism/democracy
Thank you! See you at the SIG 🤞
Such an exciting delivery! It was a pleasure to work on this with @arthurjchapman.bsky.social, would recommend contributing to TH to anyone
Such a great mentor and role model
Really enjoyed introducing myself to my year group today, meeting lots of new people. Also manage to get booked in for a highly elusive Parliament trip #historyteacher
Putting the finishing touches to our new study of Georgian Britain with year 8. Wonderful historical narrative and description from the great Ian Mortimer here to give a sense of living conditions #historyteacher
