There's their idealized version of Eric Adams, where a black moderate, socially tolerant former cop can assemble a politically viable, diverse coalition to address serious systemic problems. Then there's the actual, real-life Eric Adams, who is a corrupt moron and quite possibly insane.

What's worrisome to me is that Hypothetical Eric Adams is such a compelling pitch, while Actual Eric Adams has a Trump-like ability to pile up scandals so quickly that people get bored of keeping track of them, that he can probably fall upward pretty far on the strength of that pitch.
