Yep. There is also a lot to gain by collaborating with industry, government research institutes and NGOs that do science research.
I agree that if you want to do lots of research get out of academia. Only stay in Academia if you want/enjoy teaching. I find it amazing how many academics try to get out of teaching or don’t enjoy it. they don’t realise you can be a researcher in other organisations that don’t require you to teach.
I’m not sure about this. Management can be very difficult at times and things are not always solved quickly and can takes weeks/months. So I look forward to playing with data as a break from the unsolvable management issues.
