Nice one Steve, don’t suppose you could encourage it further south please, or get it to tell its mates all about what a great place Dorset is for warblers 😬😜
I think I know what the answer is, but anyone out there interested in a complete set if Twitching/Birding World? Free obviously...
Made a brief visit to Dunyeats ARC Reserve in Poole yesterday, for the first time in six years! Still as pleasant as ever & good to catch-up with a handful of Grayling butterflies, some expected Odonata & a rare chance to study the long-winged form of Roesel’s bush-cricket.
Nice one Nick. Perhaps it’s just me but I’m finding Garden Warblers in a lot of places this year (and I’ve not been looking much). The old railway line past Ringwood has at least 3-4 singing at present. A very underrated bird in my opinion.
Bickerley Common at Ringwood (Hampshire) continues to look great for wildfowl. Sadly, no sign of the long-staying Garganey. Best of the rest were 3 GWE (1 in full breeding plumage), 2 Red Kite, 5 Tufted Duck & 5 drake Shoveler. At least 3 Garden Warbler singing further west along the old railway.
Uddens Plantation (Ferndown), Dorset this evening: 1 Hobby & 1 Nightjar. Both flew south over the A31 at 20:45. I’ll need to check my notebooks, but I think 28th April is my earliest ever Nightjar sighting.
Langley Wood NNR in Wiltshire today was a stunning place to be amongst the dazzling display of Bluebells. Goshawk & Hawfinch were the best birds, but a Blackbird nest was a good spot by the girlfriend & just as nice to see. (The female bird returned almost as soon as we’d retreated)
First proper post on here. Admittedly, trying to keep things on here just about birding/wildlife in general & simply haven’t had time for much of that lately. Anyway, first decent day out for a while today & found this very tame Orange-tip near home.
I think breeding remains unproven within the Forest proper, but outskirts of the New Forest seem to be holding them. They don’t seem keen on utilising the Inclosures, possibly as a result of open access. Shelter belts & copses on arable land W & N of the Forest seem more appealing to them.
As I say, early days, just sticks being taken to a nest & birds in breeding plumage for a second year (dark bills/coloured lores). The numbers on the Levels are quite something, but not surprising, it is a fantastic area.
