Working on them (and B5s, along with MKIV Vws) quite literally put me through college- there’s no way I’d own a German car if I wasn’t working on it myself

Uh oh, you've outed yourself as a B6 expert, I will remember. When I first started working on cars there was no Internet, no Youtube, etc. OTOH, the chain smoking dude at the parts store actually knew some stuff. I can't imagine owning this particular car without Youtube, and ofc the software.
