Many reasons why players can be change averse. The Quake example shows a recurring one: unintended mechanic adds an extra facet of mastery, raising the skill ceiling. Players who mastered this tech are resistant to its removal because it nullifies a learned skill. They're mechanically conservative.

I always love little case studies like this, thanks. I still consider it lucky that 16x9 even exists as a standard aspect ratio, to even allow such designs. Other eras had more variety, and we're slowly creeping back in that direction with enthusiast monitors and mobile going wider.

I don't think it's aged well. It has quirky subversive themes that made it unique when it came out. They're not novel anymore, and can't push you through the outdated gameplay.

There's clearly some desire, devices like Backbone are successful. Maybe what's needed is curation. Epic is certainly trying to become that. Xbox has their own thing brewing, too, so I have hope.

I think about this a fair deal, and it bums me out, too. I get why exploitative, quick session stuff dominates the overall market, but I still expected a solid premium game market to also exist.
