1981 was a watershed year for NZ society, politics and music. The South African rugby team the 'Springboks' toured the country leaving violence, bloodshed and a divided society in it's wake. Wellington's Riot 111 were NZ's answer to Crass. www.youtube.com/watch?v=J47S...

Released on Simon Griggs's Propeller Records in August 1981, The Screaming Meemees 'See me go' went straight to No 1 on the NZ singles chart. A monumental event for local independent music, especially as NZ music didn't get played on the radio. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCPO...

Propeller Records only number one. Number one in August 1981, with no radio play. It sold almost 4000 copies in one day and was then deleted.

A smooth transition into the post-punk era, which is what the thread was supposed to be about so I can jump around the years a bit guilt free. 1982, The Dabs - Love the army. Along with Prime Movers, The Dabs were a band I saw a lot. I loved the whole mod scene. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKni...

Featuring members of 2nd wave punk bands, Primmers, Terrorways and Superettes, Features were arguably Auckland's (maybe NZs?) first post-punk group, releasing the City Scenes 7" in June 1980 on new label Ripper Records. It still sounds good today. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydHD...

The final AK79 track I'll share is 2nd wave punk band Primmers 'Funny Stories'. Like most of the bands I've shared so far they split before I got to see them, but also like other bands, members of Primmers went on to form other bands that I saw a lot. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSrg...

I'm guessing Proud Scum's "I am a rabbit" is NZ's best known punk song. Recorded in 1978 it's on the AK79 LP. It was also released in 2008 as a standalone 7" and now goes for stupid money on Discogs. The Lemonheads covered it on their 1989 Lick LP. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcfw...

It would be criminal of me to forget to mention Suburban Reptiles 2nd 1978 single, 'Saturday night stay at home', produced by and featuring ex-Split Enzer Phil Judd, who then went on to form The Swingers with Subs drummer Bones Hillman. Glam-punk at its finest. www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7yZ...

Recorded in 1978, The Scavengers "True Love". This song has probably had the longest legs of any of the classic NZ punk tracks. With it's opening line of 'I met her outside the IGA' it was quintessentially Kiwi. IGA is a small NZ grocery store chain. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehMT...

With Suburban Reptiles, in 1977 The Scavengers were the first wave of Auckland punk rock. They had two tracks on the essential AK79 LP. both stone classics. "True Love" (up next) and "Mysterex". www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0QQ...
