I feel you, there are some places where using that unknown can work: "I don't understand it, but I know for sure it's bad" but when it is "It's bad because I don't understand it." the whole thing feels lazy.
For real, if it is a childhood innocence thing, then why make them scary looking? Wouldn't the better move to leave them goofy lookin, and let the dichotomy be the scary thing?
