In case you were wondering how democracy is faring in Europe, the Austrian Freedom Party just got the most votes in their parliamentary election, proposing to create an Orban-like “illiberal democracy” according to the BBC.
Thanks!
How I learned the death penalty is always immoral. 🧵 When I was writing for Law & Order, I did an episode about the death penalty. One of our tech advisors was the ME who ID’d the bodies after 9/11. He was also a cantor at his synagogue. Great guy. And very very smart.
What makes the death of Marcellus Williams at the hand of the state so disgusting is the reason for killing him seems to be “we can’t call the whole process into question because we had to admit we were wrong”. At that point you’re so upside-down morally that I don’t know how you get upright.
My heart goes out to Marcellus Williams, his loved ones, and everyone who fought to save him. I hope that this radicalizes people. I hope that more and more people will join the fight against the death penalty and for a criminal justice system worthy of the name.
After weeks of obsessive debates about immigration, just 17% of today's voters in the eastern state of Brandenburg said that this was the most important issue for them. Therefore, expect more wall-to-wall coverage of mainstream pols frantically announcing/demanding new measures.
