I think maybe the notion that social media networks die overnight is in part a relic of a time when 1) social media users were far younger than they are now and 2) institutions didn’t have significant social media presence
Also, they didn't die overnight then. I think it's more that a lot of people who talk about Twitter and Facebook have short memories and/or their first social media sites *were* Twitter and Facebook and/or they don't know very much about tech.
I mean, Myspace still exists, in some capacity.
Also pre bots. We’re all living in the dead internet hypothesis.
I think the institutions (non-journo) piece is underrated, probably doesn’t need explanation. I have a distant work connection to City of San Diego’s Twitter account. They’re not going anywhere until the evidence for which the new place is is overwhelming. And then add at least 6 months.
A few institutional reporters got made fun of here, went running back there & I’m sure have convinced their colleagues “don’t go there no matter what it’s not a safe space” or whatever.
