I got an invitation from a large government supplier to a private view at the V&A of an exhibition I really wanted to see. So of course I declined. The day after, while waiting for a meeting to start, I heard three Very Senior People chatting about how much they had enjoyed it.

Gah!

I was asked out to lunch when I was a Research Fellow at Scottish Gov. I had to knock them back. The Fellowship was unpaid.
